Cowboys cut Dez

I mentioned not long ago that this was a possibility. As Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant crept up in age and clearly wasn’t the same player he used to be, his $16.5 million cap number was untenable.

Despite the incredible lack of wide receiver talent on the Cowboys, there were rumors that Dez would get cut.

And now those rumors have become a reality. The Cowboys have released Dez Bryant.

Dez is entering his age 30 season and was never a great route runner. And, he didn’t adjust his game to counteract his diminished skill set. He had his work statistical season since his rookie year, catching just six touchdown passes. That’s not going to cut it at that salary. The Cowboys now save $12.5 million in cash and $8.5 million in cap space.

Dez will find a home shortly. He’s still a big, physical target who can go up and get it. But, he’s not going to be a big ticket free agent (at least he shouldn’t be; don’t ever discount the Dolphins and Browns) as some expect him to be. He won’t be on the market long.
