Jaguars release Marcedes Lewis

Marcedes Lewis was picked in the first-round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. As a tight end, he was pretty solid over the years, lasting 12 seasons. That’s pretty impressive for a guy that was rarely – if ever – dominant.

Well, while this is a bit surprising, it’s not entirely shocking. According to Mark Long of the Associated Press, Lewis’ run with the Jags has come to an end.

“AP source: Longtime Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis being released after 12 seasons with team,” Long tweets.

I guess it’s a bit surprising because they just picked up his team option in February. But, they also signed Austin Sefarian-Jenkins and Niles Paul in free agency. So, releasing Lewis now saves them $3.5 million in cap space.

He’ll find a new home at some point.
