Solder heads to the Giants

The New York Giants made a pretty big mistake in the 2015 NFL Draft when they took left tackle Ereck Flowers. They thought they were getting their left tackle of the future, when they actually were getting a guy who was overmatched at the pro level.

The Giants still have to have a functioning left tackle, so what do you do? Well, you keep drafting more, or you turn to free agency where you have to overpay for a proven talent.

In this case, the Giants are going to take the latter route, by signing former New England Patriots tackle Nate Solder.

“The #Giants are expected to sign former #Patriots LT Nate Solder, source said. They get their franchise left tackle. Huge get,” tweets Ian Rapoport.

This is a good get, as the 29-year old will be a huge upgrade over Flowers. But, a four-year, $62 million contract with $35 million guaranteed (will believe that when I see it)? For a guy that’s never been All-Pro, nor has he been a Pro Bowler? That’s a lot of money.

My guess is that – as always – these numbers are inflated in terms of what is guaranteed. Either way, the Giants made themselves a better team.
