Phillies add Arrieta

This has been rumored for a little while, but nothing had come to fruition until Sunday. The Philadelphia Phillies have a young team with a lot of talent (depending on who you ask), but they are filled with question marks and really could use someone who is a bit more of a known entity.

That makes their signing of Jake Arrieta a sensible move. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, it’s a three-year deal worth $75 million.

“Jake Arrieta gets $75 million over 3 years,” tweets Nightengale.

$25 million per year isn’t chump change, but it’s not my money and there is no salary cap in baseball. The Phillies have plenty of money. And Arrieta was a Cy Young Award winner in 2015 and helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016. He wasn’t dominant last year, but he wasn’t bad either, with a 3.53 ERA.

The other thing I really like about this deal is that it’s only three years. I’d rather pay a bit more on a shorter contract than give out one of these stupid 8+ year deals and be stuck with a guy.
