Giants get Ogletree

A lot of wheeling and dealing in the NFL today! The latest trade we’re hearing about is from the New York Giants and Los Angeles Rams.

According to Adam Schefter, the Giants have acquired inside linebacker Alec Ogletree.

“And another trade: Rams trading LB Alec Ogletree to the New York Giants for two 2018 draft picks, per league source,” Schefter tweets.

The trade really breaks down that the Giants get Ogletree and a seventh-round pick in exchange for a fourth-round pick and a sixth. The Rams were able to recoup the fourth rounder that they sent to Kansas City in the Marcus Peters deal, while offloading a ton of cash.

In October, the Rams signed Ogletree to a four-year, $42 million contract. On the surface then, this trade makes no sense. But, basically if a running back got past Aaron Donald last year, they ran free. The inside linebackers were Ogletree and Mark Barron, both converted safeties. They are athletic and can make plays, but inside linebacker is where the big boys play. That’s where the thumpers live.

So, clearly the Rams don’t like Ogletree’s fit in defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ scheme. However, if the Giants use him differently in their 4-3 defense, they just added a good playmaker.

This trade could be beneficial to both teams.
