Panthers cut Stewart

The Carolina Panthers have been riding Jonathan Stewart since 2008, when he was the No. 13-overall pick in the NFL Draft. When healthy, he’s been dynamite, but that just is rarely the case.

So, the Panthers have decided it’s best to move on and save some money. According to beat writer Jourdan Rodrique, the Panthers have released their long-time running back.

“Source: Running back Jonathan Stewart has been cut by the Carolina Panthers,” Rodrique tweets.

The move makes sense. The Panthers will save $3.7 million this season by releasing Stewart now. He can still play, but he averaged just 3.5 yards-per carry last season and running back is one of the easiest and cheapest positions to replace.

It was time for the Panthers to move on.
