Nola named Opening Day Phillies starter

New Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler named his Opening Day starter this weekend and the news can be filed under “Uh Duh.”

I didn’t even know there was a decision to be made here, although some times managers will select different pitchers if they are opening the season on the road and they want their ace opening the season at home in front of the fans.

That said, Jim Salisbury says that Aaron Nola will be the Opening Day starter.

“Kapler says Nola will be opening day starter. Says he’s earned it,” tweets Salisbury.

Yeah, as in, he’s the team’s best pitcher. He had a 3.54 ERA last year and absolutely dominated for stretches. However, he needs to be more consistent and prevent the slumps. But, as of right now, he’s the Phillies’ best starting pitcher.

Unless, they sign Jake Arrieta. So, maybe this could change.
