Why was Butler benched?

I can’t wait to find out the truth on this one. The New England Patriots benched cornerback Malcolm Butler for their Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. It was apparently a last-minute thing and we don’t really know why Bill Belichick did it.

He said it was purely a football decision, but we’re not so sure.

“I respect Malcolm’s competitiveness,” Belichick said after the game when someone referenced Butler’s emotional post-game response to the benching. “I’m sure that he felt like he could’ve helped. I’m sure other players felt the same way. In the end, we have to make decisions that are best for the football team.”

Butler played on one snap on a punt return, and that was it. So, naturally, reporters followed up with more questions, especially considering that the Patriots stopped the Eagles once all day.

“I appreciate the question,” Belichick said, “but it would be a much longer discussion. There are a lot of things that go into that. In the end, the final decision is what I said it was.”

Did Belichick cost his team a sixth Super Bowl ring because he was making a point to Butler? Was this really a football decision or did Butler stay out late Saturday night? I can’t wait to find out what really happened.
