Rams to tag Watkins?

The Los Angeles Rams are out of the playoffs already, but I don’t think there is anyone who doubts their upward trajectory. This time last year, no one was predicting that the woeful Rams would even make the playoffs.

One of the many reasons for their turnarounds was their improvement at wide receiver. Drafting Cooper Kupp and adding Robert Woods certainly helped, but so did the acquisition of former first-round pick Sammy Watkins.

Sure, Watkins only caught 39 balls this season as the Rams spread it around to a bunch of guys this year, but he also caught eight touchdowns. That’s solid production.

And, according to Alden Gonzalez of, Rams general manager spoke Thursday for quite a while about the Rams offseason plans. One of the things he mentioned was the likelihood of franchise tagging Watkins.

The move would make sense. I’d like to get another look at him in this offense for another year before committing big bucks to him. And Watkins is only 24 years old, so he’s got plenty of room to grow.

Last year’s franchise tag for wide receivers was $15.682 million, so expect to pay a bit more than that.
