Phillies interested in Arrieta?

You may or may not have noticed that the Philadelphia Phillies were not a good baseball team last year. I don’t know where they finished, nor do I plan to look it up, but they were pretty brutal outside of bright spots like Rhys Hoskins.

So, I’m not expecting any huge splashes in free agency because they aren’t needed. General manager Matt Klentak could feel differently. There are reports that the Phillies could pursue starter Jake Arrieta.

“Phillies are considering Jake Arrieta. Not perfect match since they are a year from possible contention but many of their execs know him well from when they were with the Orioles,” tweets insider Jon Heyman.

If he was going to come at some sort of discount, fine. But, he’s not. Supposedly, he’s looking for a $200 million contract. The Philadelphia Phillies, as currently constructed, do not need a 31-year old pitcher on a $200 million contract coming off a season where his ERA was in the mid threes (3.53).

I’d rather throw the young guys out there again and see who sinks and who swims. Please, Klentak, don’t sign Arrieta to a deal like this.
