Off the Record (OTR)

Wilkerson is a Turd Ferguson

It was only a couple of years ago that the New York Jets were rumored to be shopping Sheldon Richardson. It wasn’t that he couldn’t play football, it’s just that his attitude sucked and he showed up to team meetings when he wanted to. He was sent to the Seattle Seahawks before this season.

Also lumped in with him was teammate Muhammad Wilkerson. At one point, he was an absolute stud. But, he had effort and professionalism issues as well. Did they trade him? No, in 2016 they gave him a five-year, $86 million contract. He rewarded them with a bad season last year and spotty play this season.

Hooray?

And a source tells Connor Hughes of NJ Advance Media, that it’s not just his play on the field. Wilkerson regularly shows up to team meetings when he wants. He was benched for the first quarter last week against the Kansas City Chiefs for this boorish behavior, but apparently it wasn’t an isolated incident.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Wilkerson has regularly shown up late to team’s morning meetings this season. Sometimes, he misses them altogether.

The source said a combination of the two infractions has happened at least five times since the preseason. The Jets have a full-team meeting in the morning. When late, Wilkerson, will show up at some point during the team meeting, or just after.

Next year, Wilkerson is due a salary of $16.75 million, which becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the league year. Guess who won’t be seeing $16.75 million next year?

Expect Wilkerson to hit the waiver wire as soon as the Jets can do so at minimal cost to them.
