49ers to franchise Garoppolo

The San Francisco 49ers are a pathetic, sad sack of a franchise right now. But, that might not last too much longer, and they know it.

They recently acquired New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who is in a contract year. The Patriots knew they were going to lose him so they finally had to pull a trigger on a deal.

But, I digress. Let’s get back to the part about him being in a contract year. Are they doing to sign him to a long-term deal? Are they ever going to let him actually, you know, play in a game over C.J. Beathard? Won’t they need to see something from him?

Well, it looks like the plan now (and probably was all along) is to franchise him next year.

“The franchise tag made it an easier decision to trade for him,” said head coach Kyle Shanahan. “We’ve got six games left and we’re going to have next year. Quarterbacks are expensive. And that’s not that big a deal to us.”

That’s gonna run ya. Garoppolo will make $25 million next year under the franchise, you might want to make sure he’s good (he is). He would be behind only Matt Stafford in terms of annual salary.
