Montgomery a fantasy sleeper?

It’s almost August, which means you need to start getting ready for your fantasy football draft. It’s the start of training camp, so between injuries, roster moves and changes to depth charts, you’ll be adjusting your fantasy football rankings quite a bit over the next few weeks.

There are a lot of guys to watch this year who could potentially breakout, and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy thinks one of them is his “new” running back Ty Montgomery (I say “new” because he’s a converted wide receiver).

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network mentioned that McCarthy thinks Montgomery could be a real game changer for them this season.

“Mentioned on @nflnetwork: #Packers coach Mike McCarthy is high on “the full threat” Ty Montgomery, now 224 pounds. What McCarthy told me:,” Pelissero tweets.

“Ty Montgomery – all NFL players have the challenge of staying healthy. He plays 16 games plus the playoffs, we’ll be saying a lot of great things about him in January. He can obviously run it, he can catch it,” McCarthy said. “He just needs the reps in pass protection because he’s actually really high in ability for pass protection. … That guy’s a stud now. He’s got it in his body.”

The added weight should help. Montgomery’s health and how he holds up over a 16-game season is obviously of major concern. Also a concern is that horrific Packers offensive line. They’ve lost their top two guards over the last year or so and blew a huge hole in the line.

But, in a PPR league, Montgomery could put up huge numbers. Obviously he can catch the ball (former wide receiver) and he should see a significant amount of touches as one of the few competent players in that backfield. Remember, Eddie Lacy is gone so a lot of work will fall on Ty.

He could be an insanely good RB2 this year.
