Mariners trade for Phelps

When I first saw that the Seattle Mariners traded for a set-up man from the Florida Marlins, I thought, ‘aren’t they a million games out of first place?’ And yes, they are 15.5 games back of the Houston Astros in the AL West division.

However, they are only 1.5 games back in the Wild Card. So, go for it!

The Mariners have sent a few minor leaguers (still waiting on details) to the Florida Marlins in exchange for set-up man David Phelps, according to Jon Heyman.

“david phelps heading to mariners. @jonmorosi @JeffPassan on top of it,” Heyman tweets, without the proper use of capital letters at the beginning of a sentence.

The 30-year old righthander will be a bridge to erratic closer Edwin Diaz. He has a 3.45 ERA and should help stabilize the bullpen. Right in the thick of the Wild Card, Phelps could be a nice boost to the Mariners.
