Off the Record (OTR)

No one wants Verlander?

The Detroit Tigers are 39-48 right now and eight games out of first place. Considering the AL Central is very average, they aren’t out of it. But, they aren’t exactly in the running either.

So, what do we do here? Well, let’s sell off our high-priced talent that we probably signed for way too much money back in the day.

Justin Verlander is the obvious first choice. When pitching well he’s one of the best pitchers in baseball, but this year through 18 games he’s got a 4.73 ERA. That’s not good. At all. Especially for someone making his kind of money.

Verlander is owed more than $60 million through 2019 and the Tigers would want quite a haul in return for him. FanRag Sports Jon Heyman writes that that doesn’t seem to be happening at the momen.

Heyman writes that Verlander “isn’t drawing much, if any, trade interest now.”

It seems more likely that J.D. Martinez, Justin Wilson or Alex Avila will get moved. This is why you don’t sign guys to stupid long high-priced contracts. This happens every. Single. Time.
