McVay says Goff “is our guy”

This isn’t good. Usually, one would think that when a head coach or coordinator endorses a player that it’s a good thing. It doesn’t seem like the case here with regards to Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff.

About a week ago, Rams offensive coordinator Sean McVay talked about the quarterback situation. He said that they would play “whoever we feel like gives us the best chance to win football games.” You hear that a lot from coaches, but not really when you just spent the number one overall pick in the NFL Draft on a quarterback.

And you don’t usually hear that when the backup is Sean Mannion.

But, McVay could be changing his tune (after being told to). This week he is saying that Jared Goff “is our guy.” That shouldn’ have to be said if Goff is really the guy they thought he was. He supposedly was picking up the offense rather quickly this offseason, but that could just be talk designed to lift his confidence.

The bottom line is that Goff looked terrible last year. He needs to take major steps this year in order to show the franchise that he’s the quarterback of the future. As of now, I just don’t see it.

Maybe Sean McVay doesn’t either.
