Patriots keeping Garoppolo long term?

The New England Patriots have an awesome problem. A problem that probably pisses off every single fan in the NFL that doesn’t root for the Patriots. They have perhaps the best quarterback in the NFL who has been to seven Super Bowls and won five of them. And he’s still really f’ing great even as he nears 40-years old.

Behind him, they have Jimmy Garoppolo. And based on everything we’ve seen so far from him, he can play. And it’s not easy to find NFL quarterbacks who can play at even a competent level.

There has been plenty of talk over the last couple of years about the Patriots trading him, but so far it hasn’t happened. And, according to Adam Schefter, it might never happen.

“They were never trading Garoppolo, period,” Schefter said. “My sense is…they are going to figure out a way one way or another to keep him there. I think the Patriots recognize they have what they believe is a commodity and a successor in the wings and they have developed him, put a lot of time in him. They don’t want to lose him. I don’t know how they work it out, but somehow some way something tells me they will find a way to get it done.”

Garoppolo is in a contract year, and I can’t remember the last time a team broke the bank on a backup quarterback. But, that’s kind of what they will be looking at. They could franchise him, which would be the highest priced backup QB in NFL history for sure. What you don’t want to do is rush Brady out the door. The guy just won another Super Bowl, you just can’t move on. This isn’t Trent Dilfer in 2000.

It will be interesting to see how the Patriots handle the situation. A franchise tag for 2018 might be a good idea. Brady can’t play forever, but you don’t want to move on too quickly because even if Garoppolo is awesome, he ain’t Brady.
