Saints sign Manti Te’o
- Updated: March 21, 2017
This is probably the first time we’ve even heard Manti Te’o’s name since his name was called in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He’s been with the San Diego Chargers since then, but man, for a guy with so much hype, we just rarely hear anything about him.
He hit free agency this offseason and he’s already found a home. Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports that the New Orleans Saints signed him to a two-year contract.
The Saints have agreed to a 2-year deal with former Chargers LB Manti Te’o, per source, which ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported was coming. The 26-year-old is coming back from a season-ending torn Achilles suffered last September. But when healthy, he has started 34 of 38 career games while serving as a middle linebacker, signal caller and co-captain. It will be interesting to see how the Saints plan to use him along with recently-signed MLB A.J. Klein and last year’s starting MLB Craig Robertson — both of whom have the versatility to move around.
Obviously, he was in the news big time when reports of his fake girlfriend hit the airwaves. He didn’t come out of that looking so hot, but he was also a big-time prospect. Some people here in the Philadelphia area wanted the Eagles to take him with the fourth-overall pick. Thanksfully, they didn’t.
He’s not bad. He’s a solid two-down linebacker, but that alone won’t ever make you a superstar. But, he should help solidify a Saints defense that needs all the help it can get.
