Is Jim Boeheim one of the best ever NCAA coaches?

Your opinion of Jim Boeheim as a coach can likely be determined by the answer to the following question:

How many wins does he have as Syracuse coach?

If you said over 1,000, then you are a Boeheim guy.

When the NCAA rightly punished Syracuse for violations, the organization enacted its traditionally hollow measure of removing 101 wins from Boeheim’s career record.

You know what they didn’t do? The NCAA didn’t eliminate those losses from the records of the teams that suffered the 101 defeats, so let’s spin this another way – Boeheim has dished out over 1,000 setbacks to NCAA opponents since he took over as Syracuse coach in 1976.

That’s a fact, Jack. You can take that one to the bank.

Is Boeheim, 72, who is slated retire at the end of the 2017-18, the guy?

If you’re a Syracuse supporter, you already know the answer to that question.

For starters, there’s his .719 winning percentage. His teams have finished the season ranked in the nation’s top 10 ten times. They’ve been ranked No. 1 five times during his tenure. Add in his 10 conference titles, 25 NCAA March Madness appearances, three March Madness championship game appearances and one March Madness Championship. He won with the Orangemen in 2003 when his Carmelo Anthony-led team downed the Kansas Jayhawks 81-78.

If you asked NBA star Anthony, or any of the 53 Syracuse players who’ve been drafted by NBA teams if Boeheim was the guy, you know what the answer would be. Anthony is among the 10 consensus All-Americans that Boeheim has coached, a list that also includes Derrick Coleman and Rony Sekaily.

Regardless of whether you have him at 900 or 1,000 victories, Boeheim sits second on the NCAA all-time wins list.

USA Basketball certainly sees Boeheim as the guy. He served as assistant coach for Team USA during gold-medal triumphs at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics and was also on the staff for FIBA World Championships in 1990, 2006 and 2010. He also served as chairman of USA Basketball’s men’s national junior committee from 2009-12.

His fellow coaches also see him as the guy. Boeheim served as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 2007-08. Boeheim was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.

How many wins does Boeheim have? According to Sports-Reference.com, as of Feb. 11, that total was 1,001.

Boeheim certainly knows the answer to his question.

“I’ve been a part of a thousand wins here,” Boeheim told ESPN. “I may not have that many on the record, but I’ve been here for a thousand wins, and that’s a lot of wins.”
Yes it is. And you know how many losing seasons Syracuse have endured with Boeheim at the helm?

Zero.

The ageless wonder seems to be getting better. Syracuse have been to the Final Four twice since 2012-13.

Any way you choose to add it up, the sum total of the equation is that Boeheim is definitely the guy.
