Will Watkins be ready for Week 1?

Not everyone was on board with the Buffalo Bills trading up to select Sammy Watkins in the 2014 NFL Draft. Hindsight being 20/20, they really didn’t need to. It’s not that he can’t play, quite the opposite. But, they could have stayed put and draft Odell Beckham, Jr. Or waited and taken Mike Evans, Brandon Cooks, Kelvin Benjamin, Allen Robinson…you get the idea.

Watkins is an excellent player, but a source told me that the trade to move up to get him was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Doug Marrone. Not many mediocre head coaches with little experience leave head coaching jobs with no other prospects on the horizon. I’m told it was extremely dysfunctional up there.

So now, the decision to go and get him gets even cloudier. Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News is reporting that Watkins broke his foot.

“Some more bad news for the #Bills this Monday. Multiple team sources tell me that wide receiver Sammy Watkins has broken his foot,” Dunne tweets.

Following surgery, Mike Garafolo expects Watkins to miss 6-8 weeks and there is a lot of speculation about whether or not he’ll be ready to play Week 1. The Bills are hoping that he’s ready for training camp, but I doubt that happens.

This news wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t already find out today that their first-round pick this year, Shaq Lawson, needs shoulder surgery and will be out 5-6 months.
