Whoa! Panthers yank tag off Norman

Well, this is quite surprising. One of the hottest free agents on this year’s NFL market was going to be Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman until they slapped the franchise tag on him.

In a shocking move, the Panthers have removed the tag, instantly making him a free agent.

“After a number of conversations with Josh’s agent, we realized that a long-term deal was not attainable,” Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said. “We thank Josh for all his contributions and truly wish him well.”

Wow! He was one of the best corners in the league last year. However, Gettleman isn’t stupid. Norman will be 29-years old at the end of this year and this was by far his best season as a pro. If he was looking for Revis money, giving him a long-term deal probably wasn’t smart.

There are plenty of teams that could use his services, but it will be interesting to see what kind of a deal he gets. Remember, Norman played on an insanely good defense. Before someone breaks the bank, I’d advise them to take a whiff of Byron Maxwell.
