Buccaneers prefer Winston?

What will the Tampa Bay Buccaneers do with the No. 1-overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft? They need a quarterback and many experts think Heisman Trophy-winner Marcus Mariota will be the guy.

However, Pat Yasinskas of ESPN is hearing that coach Lovie Smith actually prefers Florida State’s Jameis Winston.

Winston ran a pro-style offense at FSU, whereas Mariota ran a gimmick spread offense at Oregon that probably only work in college or if your team is coached by Chip Kelly.

Supposedly, the reason Smith picked Dick Koetter over Marc Trestman as offensive coordinator is because he’s in agreement on Winston. Trestman apparently would rather have Mariota.

I don’t think I blame Lovie here. Unless you’re committed to running a Chip Kelly offense, how good will Mariota be? Can he run a real NFL offense? My guess is that a team drafts him and if they find out he can’t, they get on the phone with Howie Roseman in Philadelphia pronto.
