13-year deal for Stanton? DUMB.

We’ve been hearing about this long-term deal that the Miami Marlins plan to give Giancarlo Stanton for a while now. It didn’t make sense to me then and it still doesn’t.

Sources tell CBSSports.com that the Marlins and Stanton are closing in on a 13-year, $325 million contract. There seems to be an agreement to these terms, they are just finalizing language (I don’t think that means that they want it in Spanish, but I can’t be sure).

It’s not that I don’t like Stanton as a player. I love him. But nobody – nobody – is worth that kind of dough for that period of time. And to be clear, I have a much bigger issue with the length than with the money. You want to pay the hell out of him for four years? Go for it.

But, 13?! 13 years?! He’s 25 now and will be 38 when he finishes this deal. He has opt-out clauses, but why would he opt out?

Mark my words the Marlins will be very sorry they did this deal at some point. Look at this way: the Marlins stunk with him, what’s going to happen if you let him walk? You’ll lose games not sell many tickets?

13 years is sooooo far down the road. These long, mega-deals are just so stupid.
