“No chance” the Patriots franchise Talib

AqibTalibThe headline may sound a ridiculous as the New England Patriots really need to keep free-agent-to-be cornerback Aqib Talib. Troubled in the past, Talib seems to have gotten his stuff together and become a productive member of society. At the very least, a productive member of the Patriots.

He’s one of the best corners in football and the Patriots are just not the same defense without him (see: AFC Championship Game). The Patriots would like to sign him to a team-friendly three-year deal, probably in the ball park of $21 million.

Talib might not go for that as he’s still only 27-years old and one of the best in the business. So, will they franchise him if they can’t work something out?

According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, there is “no chance” that they tag him and pay him nearly $12 million for the season. I think he’d be $11.35 for the year to be exact.

Talib will – and should – be paid. How it gets worked out remains to be seen, but the Patriots are not really in position to blink here.
