This column is getting tougher and tougher to write. I just don’t know what else to say about this Philadelphia Eagles team that hasn’t already been said about Donald Trump. On Monday Night Football, on the national stage, they showed a modicum of competence while still being bumbling fools. They lost the game in hysterical fashion 30-22. It should also be noted that the Carolina Panthers should not be doing any bragging either. So, let’s look at the game:
What I liked…
-Nick Foles is okay so far. Some awful decision making mixed in with some nice, accurate passes. Nothing big down the field except for a 51-yard pass interference penalty, but hey, that still counts. Very tough to get a read on him.
-Oh, Bryce Brown. He giveth with one hand and the other taketh away. He set an Eagles single-game rookie rushing record with 178 yards on 19 carries. That’s insane. He also had two touchdowns and showed excellent speed and north/south running.
-The offensive line was better. They were okay, which is a huge improvement over “complete horse manure.” They actually opened some holes for Brown, which I didn’t know they were capable of. I’m not breaking balls here, I’m serious. I didn’t know they were capable of that.
-Vinny Curry finally got to play, not sure what took so long. He was active and showed that he should have been playing a long time ago.
-Alex Henery has now hit 19 field goals in a row. That’s a new Eagles record. Good on him. Too bad when the only offense every week is a few field goals, no one gets too excited about your work.
-Damaris Johnson was excellent on punt returns last night, showing some of the reasons we got a little bit excited about him in preseason. However, it should be noted that just about every facet of the Panthers special teams is completely worthless. Still, Damaris was great.
-Big win for the Eagles last night: That’s one more win for the Panthers and one more loss for the Eagles. That will matter in April.
…and not so much…
-DeSean Jackson is out for the year? Does it even matter anymore? Not like they were winning games with him.
-Jason Babin is really not worth a damn. And apparently the Eagles agree because they just cut him.
-Bryce Brown, I don’t care how fast you are. I don’t care if you’re averaging more than 10 yards per carry. If you put the ball on the carpet repeatedly, you will not play in the NFL. I promise you that. I didn’t like that “I’m really mad about those two fumbles” wasn’t the first sentence out of his mouth in his post-game interview with Derrick Gunn either. That topic had to be brought up to him.
-Anyone else notice that it looks like Brown got tips for holding the ball from LeSean McCoy? Where are the friggin’ coaches? I don’t get it. No one noticed this? No one brought this up?
-Foles could have thrown four picks in this game. Woulda, coulda, shoulda, fine. But, this worries me moving forward.
-Hey Cam Newton, would you please put the Superman cape away? Please? It’s only because you’re 3-7 and you look like a jackass when you prance around with a record like that.
-Finally! Brandon Boykin is breaking a huge retu……nevermind.
-Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Killed the Eagles again. Holding on to the football is way too much to ask of this football team.
-Sooo…Boykin blitzes from the slot. Yet…no one covers Brandon Lafell who is running wide open. Aren’t you supposed to have someone immediately jump on the guy who was left wide open?
-What’s worse is that the story after the game was that only one DB was supposed to blitz and it wasn’t supposed to be Boykin. Boykin said he was indeed supposed to blitz, but that Nate Allen ran to the wrong side. Andy Reid said that Nate ran to the proper side. They can’t even agree on what the play was supposed to be, let alone execute it in real time.
-This is one of the worst secondaries I’ve seen in a long time. Forget individual talent, they aren’t remotely on the same page. Doesn’t seem like anyone is on the same page on the defense.
-Laugh. That’s what you could do…laugh. Three offsides penalties in a row at a crucial point in the game. Laugh.
-I won’t say that this team quit. I don’t think that’s the case. But, it doesn’t seem like anyone has any clue what they are supposed to be doing. This roster and coaching staff are a mess, and I don’t trust Howie Roseman to clean it up.
There, I’ll leave you with that final thought. The Eagles are about to get their biggest overhaul since 1998/1999, and the guy in charge of it is not a football guy. Enjoy your week.
