Red Sox to get serious about signing Ortiz?

David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox need to do something if they are going to compete in their division with the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, and oh look here, the Baltimore Orioles. The Red Sox finished with 93 losses, which most experts think is awful. They got rid of bloated contracts such as Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Kevin Youkilis and Adrian Gonzalez, they have plenty of wiggle room money wise to improve the roster.

And it looks like they will start by trying to re-sign David Ortiz. A team source tells Joe McDonald of ESPNBoston.com that they are expected to start negotiations “some point next week.”

Big Papi be an unrestricted free agent just five days after the World Series ends.

“David is someone who we feel strongly about bringing back, and we’re trying to figure out a way to do that and we hope that happens,” GM Ben Cherington said.

Ortiz is 36-years old and wants a multi-year deal, so buyer beware on that. He made $14.75 million this past season, so there is your starting point.
