Mets considering shutting down Santana?
New York Mets starter Johan Santana was surprisingly good for parts of this season coming off of a major injury. He even threw a no-hitter on June 1.
But, lately, he’s been awful. Since that no-no, his ERA has been a woeful 8.27 and he’s allowed at least six runs in each of his last three starts. Regardless of whether he’s just tired or whatever, he’s been bad.
And according to the Newark Star-Ledger, the Mets will consider just shutting him down for the year.
Manager Terry Collins was coy in his answer on Santana.
“As of this moment in time,” Collins said, “he’s starting Thursday.”
GM Sandy Alderson is expected to meet with Collins on Monday to decide Johan’s future.
Santana has said he wants to finish the season rather than rest his surgically repaired throwing shoulder, but he also understands that shutting it down could be what is best for him long-term.
“What he’s basically saying,” Collins said, “is if that’s what we think we should do to make sure he’s healthy next year, he’s on board with it.”
