Phillies place Cliff Lee on waivers

This sounds way worse than it actually is. The Philadelphia Phillies weren’t able to move Cliff Lee at the trade deadline, but that doesn’t mean that they are hell bent on keeping him.

Lee, who is not having a good year but is by no means toast as many have speculated, was placed on waivers Thursday.

Yes, it sounds bad. In most sports that means they cut your ass. In this case, it’s a move that the Phillies would be irresponsible not to make. If he clears waivers and no one puts in a claim, he’s available for a post-trade deadline trade to another club. If someone does put in a claim, they could work out a trade with the Phillies or the Phils could pull him off of waivers.

Or, the Phillies could do nothing if someone put in a claim and that team would get Lee, bloated contract and all. I don’t necessarily see that happening.
