Indians designate Lowe for assignment
Cleveland Indians pitcher Derek Lowe has had a lot of success at the major-league level. Not so long ago, New York Mets fans were bitching that they lost him to the Atlanta Braves.
The big problem? The fourth year that he wanted in his contract. The Atlanta Braves gave it to him, the Mets weren’t willing to do it. And they were right. Lowe was a pretty good pitcher for the Braves for the most part, but towards the end of that contract, he turned into garbage.
The Cleveland Indians (Lowe’s latest home) have now realized this. The team has designated him for assignment. That’s the polite way of saying “get lost.”
Lowe gave up seven earned runs on Tuesday night and has a 5.52 ERA this year. In short, it looks like he’s toast.
Sure, some team looking for depth at starting pitching could find him to be of interest. But, he’s 39-years old and it’s doubtful that he’ll ever regain his status as a solid sinkerball pitcher.
We’ll see.
