Here comes Olt
The trade deadline recently passed. And the Texas Rangers were a team named in a bunch of trade rumors. With Colby Lewis done for the season, the team was tied to numerous starting pitchers in trade rumors.
Will they trade for Cliff Lee again? Will they go after another front-line starter? It turns out, they ended up landing Ryan Dempster from the Cubs. But, one of the big names that was expected to be returned to a team providing them with a top starter was 3B Mike Olt. Olt is one of the top offensive prospects in all of baseball and it turns out that they didn’t need to move him to get a top starter.
Not only did they not trade him, they have now promoted him from Double-A. Yes, Double-A, where many top prospects reside unless they are moved slowly up the organizational ladder or are blocked by someone at the MLB level.
The Rangers are probably going to want to see him play even though he’s never played above the Double-A level.
Olt was hitting .287 with 27 HR’s and 81 RBI’s in Double-A, so it will be interesting to monitor him in the Bigs. Let’s hope he doesn’t go the way of Dom Brown.
