Crawford will need Tommy John
Usually when you hear about Tommy John surgery, it involves a pitcher. But, in this rare case, it looks like Boston Red Sox OF Carl Crawford could be lined up for it.
That’s what happens when your elbow continues to be an issue even after platelet-rich plasma injections had little effect. Crawford had that injection back in April, but because it didn’t do much, his doctors are telling him he’ll probably have to have Tommy John.
Ok, so why wait to have it done then?
“Thought about it,” Crawford said Sunday, “but at this point, if I can play, I think (the Red Sox) want me out on the field. I’m just trying to do everything I can to get back out on the field. Right now, I feel like if I couldn’t help the team I wouldn’t get out there.”
GM Ben Cherington says that Tommy John surgery isn’t something they are considering at this time regarding Crawford’s UCL injury.
“A lot of position players player through UCL injuries without issue,” Cherington said.
But, the reality of surgery could come sooner rather than later.
“Probably at some point it’s going to blow out on me,” Crawford said. “It’s one of those things that is what it is.”
Crawford continues to be a huge free agent bust for the Red Sox, even if this isn’t his fault. Looks like a lot of money down the drain.
