Poe is plummeting just as he should
We understand why there is a Combine for the NFL. NFL teams need to get a good look at these guy so they don’t go drafting one-eyed receivers like Wesley Walker and not find out about him having one eye until after they took him (turns out it didn’t matter, he was really good). But, that doesn’t mean you should greatly alter your perception of a player based on how many times he can lift 225 lbs. or how fast he can run the shuttle.
And that’s what has happened with Memphis DT Dontari Poe.
Teams were getting smitten with him because he was a monster at the Combine. Now, it can be tough to project a beast that comes from a school in a poor conference. You can always say he was just beating up on inferior competition. But, Poe wasn’t. He wasn’t even dominating in Conference USA! So, it makes no sense that he was shooting up draft boards because of his workout numbers.
But, now, according to the Sporting News, Poe is sliding back down draft boards as teams go back and look at his game tapes. Gee…ya think?!
According to the report, many teams are comparing him to Ryan Sims, who the Chiefs took No. 6-overall in 2002. He played for nine years, but was a colossal disappointment.
We don’t know why this is news. How can you get paid so much money to scout players and predict their futures in the NFL, yet continue to move guys way up your board based on workouts? Makes no sense.
