Chad Johnson speaks

We know that people periodically get annoyed by the antics of Mr. Chad Johnson in Cincinnati, but we think he’s hysterical. Yes, he can be a pain. But overall, he’s one funny dude. He finally broke his silence in talking to Geoff Hobson of

“It’s about time, isn’t it?” Johnson told Hobson via cell phone. “I haven’t talked to you since December.”

And Chad thinks the 2009 Bengals can be even better than the 2005 version that won the AFC North but was one-and-done in the playoffs.

“The defense is sick now they’re so good and we’ll be better on offense because I’ll be better,” Johnson said. “I’m in unbelievable shape. I can run the Boston Marathon without stopping.”

That may be, but would the Bengals fans cheer for him if he as so much played a chess match?

“I need the fans to embrace me. I know people are mad at me. I read the message boards, but I’ve apologized 85 times,” Johnson said. “If they can embrace me, I can spread my wings and be myself. When they’re mad at me, I don’t know if I can be myself. I’m an emotional guy. I want them to know that I love them and I want to win. I want to be on point with everybody on the team and win. I know I’ve been frustrated when we haven’t won. Maybe now when I vent, I should just do it to the fans on the message boards.”

But what about all the nonsense and talk that he and Carson Palmer aren’t getting along? Is any of it true?

“I know people are trying to say we’re mad at each other and all that, but we’re good,” he said. “We’re like Brokeback Mountain. I’m going to be with Carson so much in July that I’m going to be the nanny (for his new twins).

“I’m going to babysit. We were getting down to the details. If he and the wife go out, they have to be back by three. I asked for permission to have company over.”

Through all of this, we never really thought there was a rift between Palmer and Johnson. Why would there be? It was only perceived as a rift because Chad would be a no-show for whatever and then they’d ask Carson about it, and he’d just say we’re only worried about the people that are here. That’s not a shot at Chad, it’s just a fact coming from someone that would rather not talk about it.

And while the Bengals’ defense is better this year, we aren’t so sure they are ready to compete for a playoff spot. Then again, some team always pops up every year that no one saw coming.
